Poverty can happen very quickly to anyone. A guaranteed livable income would help address the persistent inequities within our country. The leaders of the United Church of Canada, the Anglican Church of Canada as well as Evangelical Lutheran Church have initiated a information and letter writing campaign to request the federal government implement such a program. As well individual communities at the municipal level have been urging the federal government and BC municipalities collectively have urged the federal government to do so. Port Hardy has a Poverty Reduction Action Plan created in 2022 but more can be done.
While this campaign started in 2020 during the pandemic, nothing permanent was implemented by the federal goverment. With inflation high, it has become even more necessary to have a guaranteed livable income. For more information and sample letters to send to your member of parliament click on this link.
