Alberta Billy, a member of the Laichwiltach We Wai kai Nation, Quadra Island, BC, helped to shape the course of history of the United Church. In 1981, Billy stood before the leaders of the United Church and asked the church to apologize to the Native peoples of Canada for “what you did to them in residential school”. Billy was a lifelong member of the United Church who also represented Aboriginal church members at the Executive General Council.
