THE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY

Call To Worship
Ruth said to Naomi:
Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge;
your people shall be my people, and your God my God.
We come to worship the God of Naomi and Ruth.
Jesus calls to us saying:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens,
I will give you rest.”
We come to worship the God of Jesus Christ and truly find rest.
God hears us calling and responds.
God leads me beside still waters.
God restores my soul.
We come to worship
following our ancestors, following Jesus
and finding rest in God, our Beloved Creator

Opening Prayer
God of all time and space, we come following the saints, the teachers of our faith.
They wrote their wisdom in our Scriptures, they taught us in Sunday School, they sit beside us today.
One said to Jesus after hearing him teach:
“You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘God is one, and besides God there is no other’; and ‘to love God with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength.’
We echo that wisdom and proclaim that the commandment to love God and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself’—is much more important than any sacrifices.
Help us honour the wisdom of the saints, the teachers of our faith.
Help us become saints and teach others of our faith in Jesus in whose name we pray, Amen.

*Hymn: VU 580 Faith of our Fathers

Faith of our fathers, living still
in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;
O how our hearts beat high with joy,
whene’er we hear that glorious word:
faith of our fathers, holy faith,
we will be true to you till death.

Faith of our mothers, daring faith,
your work for Christ is love revealed,
spreading God's word from pole to pole,
making love known and freedom real:
faith of our fathers, holy faith,
we will be true to you till death.

Faith of our sisters, brothers too,
who still must bear oppression's might,
raising on high, in prisons dark,
The cross of Christ still burning bright:
faith of our fathers, holy faith,
we will be true to you till death.

Faith born of God, O call us yet;
bind us with all who follow you,
sharing the struggle of your cross
until the world is made anew.
faith of our fathers, holy faith,
we will be true to you till death.

Passing of the Peace
“The peace of Christ be with you”
And also with you.

*Hymn: MV 216 Wherever You May Go

Wherever you may go, I will follow,
and your people shall be my people too.
Wherever you may go, I will follow,
for I would be faithful, loyal and true.

Say the word and I will stay,
I will never go away,
we will travel side by side
and God’s love will be our guide.

Wherever you may go, I will follow,
and your people shall be my people too.
Wherever you may go, I will follow,
for I would be faithful, loyal and true.

From beginning to the end
I will always be your friend,
when you need me, I’ll be there,
you can trust my faithful care.

Wherever you may go, I will follow,
and your people shall be my people too.
Wherever you may go, I will follow,
for I would be faithful, loyal and true.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD'S VOICE
Loving God, you speak to us in so many ways.
Speak to us now through the reading of the scriptures.
Hutłilala's!

Focus Scripture:
Ruth 1:1-18 and Mark 12:28-34 (Common English Bible)

This is the trustworthy witness of God’s faithful people through the ages,
The divine word to us today. Amen.

Sermon – Rev. Leigh Sinclair

GOD INVITES US TO RESPOND IN FAITH AND HOPE

Invitation to the Offering

*Hymn: VU 494 Those Hearts That We Have Treasured

Those hearts that we have treasured,
those lives that we have shared,
those loves that walked beside us,
those friends for whom we’ve cared,
their blessing rests upon us,
their life is memory,
their suffering is over,
their spirits are set free.

They still give hope and comfort,
they did not lose the fight,
they showed us truth and goodness,
they shine into our night.
Remember days of gladness;
remember times of joy;
remember all the moments
that grief cannot destroy.

From hearts that we have treasured,
from lives that we have shared,
from loves that walked beside us,
from friends for whom we’ve cared,
we’ve learned to treasure kindness,
we’ve learned that grace provides,
we’ve learned to be together,
we’ve learned that love abides.

Words: Sylvia Dunstan.

Offerings Response: VU 581 When We Are Living v2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

*Hymn: VU 298 When You Walk from Here 3x

When you walk from here,
when you walk from here,
walk with justice, walk with mercy,
and with God’s humble care.

WE GO INTO THE WORLD TO SHARE GOD'S LOVE

Sending Forth
Jesus calls to us saying:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens.
I will give you rest.”
We have rested and been comforted by this worship.
Now God is leading us out into the world again.
God leads us out, restoring our souls for service.
We go to serve and love following our ancestors,
following Jesus and loving God and neighbour.

*Three-fold Amen
