THE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY
Call to Worship
We come seeking signs of hope along our wilderness way.
Where there is hope, there is new life.
You breathe new life into our dreams.
and in gratitude we rejoice with shouts of joy.
.
Lent 5 – The Candle of Health
Two candles plus the Christ candle are lit.
On this fifth Sunday of Lent, we light a candle to pray for wholeness and health for all living things.
We rest in the glow of that candle now.
(a moment of silence)
As we consider how precious health can be, we acknowledge our concerns about the various illnesses that can change so much in our world. We grieve sicknesses that affect the body, the mind, and the spirit of those who are afflicted by them. We grieve the present state of our natural environment and how its overall decline has changed how we live and how we might live.
As the shadows of Lent move ever closer, we extinguish our candle of health, just for today, as we commit ourselves to healing what is sick and mending what is broken, so that we can all find wholeness.
All sing: VU 108 Throughout these Lenten Days and Nights (verse 1 only)
Throughout these Lenten days and nights
we turn to walk the inward way,
where, meeting Christ, our guide and light,
we live in hope till Easter Day.
Opening Prayer
Holy One, companion on this Lenten trail, we come daring to hold a new vision, and as you breathe new life into our dreams we begin to see signs of spring-like hope. Guide us, embrace us with your Spirit, and lead us to joy. Amen.
*Hymn: MV 40 Never Ending Joy
Refrain:
Never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy,
never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy!
God of every tribe, every language,
God of every river and sea,
God of every mountain and island,
you bring joy to me.
Never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy,
never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy!
God of every hill, every valley,
God of every leaf, every tree,
God of every cloud, every raindrop,
you bring joy to me.
Never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy,
never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy!
God of every song, every story,
God of every captive set free,
God of every dance, every footstep,
you bring joy to me.
Never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy,
never ending joy, never ending joy, never ending joy!

Passing of the Peace
Let us join together in the ancient ritual of the passing of the peace saying to each other:
The peace of Christ be with you
And also with you
Prayer for Transformation
Theme Time
*Hymn: VU 506 Take My Life and Let It Be
Take my life, and let it be
consecrated, all for thee;
take my moments and my days;
let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move
at the impulse of thy love;
take my feet, and let them be
swift and purposeful for thee.
Take my lips, and let them be
filled with messages from thee;
take my intellect, and use
every power as thou shalt choose.
Take my will, and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine;
take my heart, it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne.
Take my love; and I will pour
at thy feet its treasure store;
take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee.

*The Gospel John 12:1-8
This is the trustworthy witness of God’s faithful people through the ages,
The divine word to us today. Amen.

Invitation to the Offering
*Hymn MV 79 Spirit Open My Heart
Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.
God, replace my stony heart
with a heart that’s kind and tender.
All my coldness and fear
to your grace I now surrender.
Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.
Write your love upon my heart
as my law, my goal, my story.
In each thought, word, and deed,
may my living bring you glory.
Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.
May I weep with those who weep,
share the joy of sister, brother.
In the welcome of Christ,
may we welcome one another.
Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.
Words: Ruth Duck
*Response VU 581 When We Are Living (verse 2)
Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

People: Guide our path to make a new way in the wilderness.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
*Hymn VU 633 Bless Now, O God, the Journey
Bless now, O God, the journey
that all your people make,
the path through noise and silence,
the way of give and take.
The trail is found in desert
and winds the mountain round,
then leads beside still waters,
the road where faith is found.
Bless sojourners and pilgrims
who share this winding way,
whose hope burns through the terrors,
whose love sustains the day.
We yearn for holy freedom
while often we are bound.
Together we are seeking
the road where faith is found.
Divine Eternal Lover,
you meet us on the road.
We wait for lands of promise
where milk and honey flow.
But waiting not for places,
you meet us all around.
Our covenant is written
on roads, as faith is found.
Words: Sylvia Dunstan
Sending Forth
