THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
Come to worship with abundant hope.
Our worries and limitations will no longer bind us. We will find joy with our faith community friends.
Come to worship with abundant hope.
In Christ we will find a challenging path to follow. Undreamt-of opportunities will open for us.
You come to worship with abundant hope.
We do, thanks be to God.

*Hymn: VU 223 Eternal, Unchanging, We Sing

Eternal, Unchanging, we sing to your praise;
your mercies are endless, and righteous your ways;
your servants proclaim the renown of your name.
You rule in omnipotence, ever the same.

Again we rejoice in the world you have made,
your mighty creation in beauty arrayed;
we thank you for life and we praise you for joy,
for love and for hope that no power can destroy.

We praise you for Jesus, our Master and Lord,
the might of his Spirit, the truth of his word,
his comfort in sorrow, his patience in pain,
the faith sure and steadfast that Jesus shall reign.

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is proclaimed.
Hebrew Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13

Psalm 20: VU 742
Refrain: Not a word shall fail of the promise God has made.
May God answer you in the day of trouble, and the name of God defend you.
May God send you help from the sanctuary, and give you support from the holy mountain.
May God remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt sacrifices.
May God grant you your heart’s desire, and give success to all your plans.
May we rejoice in your victory and triumph in the name of our God.
May God fulfil your every wish.
R: Not a word shall fail of the promise God has made.

Now I know, O God, that you help your anointed,
and will answer from you holy heaven with the victorious might of your right hand.
Some put their trust in chariots, and some in horses;
but we will trust in the name of our God.
They will totter and fall;
but we will rise and stand upright.
God, save those who rule,
and answer us when we call.
R: Not a word shall fail of the promise God has made.

Epistle: 2 Corinthians: 5:6-21

*Hymn: MV 37 Each Blade of Grass

Each blade of grass, ev’ry wing that soars,
the waves that sweep across a distant shore,
make full the circle of God.
Each laughing child, ev’ry gentle eye,
a forest lit beneath a moon-lit sky,
make full the circle of God.

Each silent paw, ev’ry rounded stone,
the buzz that echoes from a honey’d comb,
make full the circle of God.
Each fire-brimmed star, ev’ry out-stretched hand,
the wind that leaps and sails across the land,
make full the circle of God.

Each icy peak, ev’ry patterned shell,
the joyous chorus that the dawn foretells,
make full the circle of God.
Each cosmic hue, ev’ry creature’s way,
all form the beauty of this vast array,
making full the circle of God.

Words: Keri K. Wehlander

*Gospel: Mark 4: 26-34
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Prayer of Confession
Gift-giving God,
we confess that we do not always know our own worth, that we can forget our capacity for greatness and squander opportunities for righteousness. You offer us gifts for service in your world, and yet we can neglect your gifts, store them away in the closet, shove them under the stairs, and give away to others the gifts you have chosen especially for us. May we have wisdom to know our gifts, courage to open them up, and dedication to use them for your glory. Amen.

God has created us not for fear or doubt, but for power and love. Rejoice in the giftedness of God’s creation, knowing that each one of us is created with a special purpose, a special calling, and a special gift.
Thanks be to God. Amen.

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF

Bidding: We wait for God’s good time.
Response: We pray for those who bring God’s good time closer.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: MV 138 My Love Colours Outside the Lines

My love colours outside the lines,
exploring paths that few could ever find;
and takes me into places where I’ve never been before,
and opens doors to worlds outside the lines.

My Lord colours outside the lines,
turns wounds to blessings, water into wine;
and takes me into places where I’ve never been before,
and opens doors to worlds outside the lines.

We’ll never walk on water if we’re not prepared to drown,
body and soul need a soaking from time to time.
And we’ll never move the gravestones if we’re not prepared to die,
and realize there are worlds outside the lines.

My soul longs to colour outside the lines,
tear back the curtains, sun, come in and shine;
I want to walk beyond the boundaries where I’ve never been before,
throw open doors to worlds outside the lines.

We’ll never walk on water if we’re not prepared to drown,
body and soul need a soaking from time to time.
And we’ll never move the gravestones if we’re not prepared to die,
and realize there are worlds outside the lines.

My soul longs to colour outside the lines,
tear back the curtains, sun, come in and shine;
I want to walk beyond the boundaries where I’ve never been before,
throw open doors to worlds outside the lines.

*Response: VU 540 Grant Us, God, the Grace

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,
with a spirit large and free,
that ourselves and all our living
we may offer faithfully.

Prayer over the Gifts
These gifts will bring God’s rule closer.
God’s rule, where those with the least are placed first. God’s rule, where power is used for the good of all. God’s rule, where cooperation is practiced all the time. God’s rule, where the teachings of Jesus are lived out.
God’s loving rule.
We will rejoice as we bring God’s rule closer. Amen.

Commissioning
Go from here as God’s gardeners.
We will plant seeds of hope and compassion. We will nurture those young in years and those young in the faith. We will care for those who are sick or discouraged. We will harvest renewed confidence, forgiveness, and serenity.
And God, Eternal Creator, will bless you.
Thanks be to God. Amen! Gilakas’la!

*Hymn: MV 145 Draw the Circle Wide

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,

draw the circle wide.

God the still point of the circle,
‘round whom all creation turns;
nothing lost, but held forever,
in God’s gracious arms.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,

draw the circle wide.

Let our hearts touch far horizons,
so encompass great and small;
let our loving know no borders,
faithful to God’s call.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,

draw the circle wide.

Let the dreams we dream be larger,
than we’ve ever dreamed before;
let the dream of Christ be in us,
open every door.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,

draw the circle wide.

Words and music Gordon Light.

*Three-fold Amen
