THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
This is the place of peace.
In worship, we can place our everyday concerns into God’s presence.
These are sacred moments.
In worship, we come close to the Holy One.
This is the time of listening.
In worship, we hear the voice of God.
Our faith community friends are around us.
As the body of Christ, we will work with compassion.

Opening Prayer
God calls us to the quiet place.
We will be open to Spirit.
God calls us to the place of learning.
We will be prepared to learn and teach.
God calls us to the place of sharing.
We will be ready to give and receive.
God calls us to the responsibilities of discipleship.
We hear the call to follow faithfully, and we will do just that. Amen.

*Hymn: VU 264 Immortal, Invisible God only Wise

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light in accessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest, to both great and small,
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
then wither and perish but naught changeth thee!

Thou reignest in glory, thou rulest in light;
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all praise we would render, O help us to see
‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is proclaimed.

Psalm 89: 20-37
20 I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him;
21 my hand shall always remain with him; my arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not outwit him, the wicked shall not humble him.
23 I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him.
24 My faithfulness and steadfast love shall be with him; and in my name his horn shall be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers.
26 He shall cry to me, “You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation!”
27 I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
28 For-ever I will keep my steadfast love for him, and my covenant with him will stand firm.
29 I will establish his line for ever, and his throne as long as the heavens endure.
30 If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my ordinances,
31 if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments,
32 then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with scourges;
33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love, or be false to my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant, or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
35 Once and for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David.
36 His line shall continue for ever, and his throne endure before me like the sun.
37 It shall be established for ever like the moon, an enduring witness in the skies.’

Epistle Ephesians 2: 11-22

*Hymn: VU 626 I Heard the Voice of Jesus

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto me and rest;
lay down, O weary one, lay down
your head upon my breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
weary and worn and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
the living water; thirsty one,
stoop down and drink and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;
look unto me, your morn shall rise,
and all your days be bright.”

I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my star, my sun;
and in that light of life I’ll walk
till travelling days are done.

*Gospel: Mark 6: 30-34, 53-56
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection: “Healing at the Fringe”

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF

Bidding: What can we do?
Response: We pray for them and will work with them.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: VU 595 We Are Pilgrims

We are pilgrims on a journey,
fellow travellers on the road;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

Sister, let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear;
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh I'll laugh with you;
I will share your joy and sorrow,
till we've seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we've known together
of Christ's love and agony.

Brother, let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.

Words and music: Richard Gillard

*Response: VU 581 When We Are Living v2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Prayer over the Gifts
Gracious God, we give so that the people of this faith community will know peace.
Bless us as we pray. Bless us as we are quiet before you, loving God.
Gracious God, we give so that the needs of our faith community friends will be compassionately met.
Bless us as we care. Bless us as we accompany the grieving.
Gracious God, we give so that through our wider outreach, those whose names we will never know will find support.
Bless us as we counter apathy and insensitivity. Bless us in our quest for justice. Amen.

*Hymn: VU 642 Be Thou My Vision (v. 1,2,4,5)

Be thou my vision, O joy of my heart;
naught be all else to me save that thou art,
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, my calm in all strife;
I ever with thee, and thou in my life;
thou loving parent, thy child may I be,
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise,
thou mine inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only, the first in my heart,
great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.

Great God of heaven, after victory won,
may I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O ruler of all.

Commissioning
Go from here as peace-seekers.
We will take time to be quiet and listen for God’s voice. We will face our challenges honestly and work through them. We will name our conflicts and seek to resolve them. We will realize our grudges and let them go. We will give thanks for God’s gifts and keep on giving thanks. We will identify the injustices around us and commit to bringing change. We will rejoice in our Christian tradition and proclaim its relevance for today.
You go from here as those who seek peace, and you will find peace.
Thanks be to God. Amen. Gilakas’la!

*Three-fold Amen.
