THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship

*Hymn: MV 135 Called by Earth and Sky

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious these waters, endless seas,
deep ocean’s dream,
waters of healing, rivers of rain,
the wash of love again.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious this gift, the air we breathe;
wind born and free.
Breath of the Spirit, blow through this place,
our gathering and our grace.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious these mountains, ancient sands;
vast and fragile land.
Seeds of our wakening, rooted and strong,
Creation’s faithful song.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious the fire that lights our way,
bright dawning day.
Fire of passion, sorrows undone,
our faith and justice one.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Words and music: Pat Mayberry

Opening Prayer
O God of all Creation,
we come to you in awesome wonder.
You richly created the heavens and earth;
may we never become complacent to the utopia that surrounds us.
You reveal wisdom and goodness;
may our hearts be open to your grace.
You are the one upon whom all Creation depends;
may you always be our life-sustaining manna.
You replenish the earth;
may we be shrouded in your blanket of love.
You gift us with your Holy Spirit;
may new life inspire this sacred space.
You are the one of all understanding;
may our words, songs, and prayers be acceptable in your presence.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is proclaimed.

Hebrew Scripture: Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23

Psalm 125 VU 849
Refrain: Those who trust in God stand fast forever.
Those who trust in God are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so God, you surround your people now and forever.
R: Those who trust in God stand fast forever.

The sceptre of the wicked shall not rest on the land assigned to the just, lest the just should put out their hand to do evil.
Do good, O God, to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart.
As for those who turn aside into crooked ways, our God shall lead them away with evil-doers;
but peace shall be upon Israel.
R: Those who trust in God stand fast forever.

Epistle James 2: 1-10, 14-17

*Hymn: MV 144 Like a Healing Stream

Like a healing stream in a barren desert,
Spirit water bringing life to dusty earth,
God is trickling through our lives as in a dream unfolding,
promising revival and rebirth…
like a healing stream.

Like a gentle rain on a thirsty garden,
Spirit water come to nourish tiny seed,
God is bubbling through the soil to coax a new creation,
yearning for an end to want and need…
like a gentle rain.

Like a river strong with a restless current,
Spirit water rushing on to distant shore,
God is carving out a channel in a new direction,
calling for an end to hate and war…
like a river strong.

Like a mighty sea reaching far horizons,
Spirit water with a love both deep and wide,
God is working in our hearts to shape a new tomorrow:
God will always challenge and provide!
Like a mighty sea, like a river strong,
like a gentle rain, like a healing stream.

Words and music: Bruce Harding.

*Gospel: Mark 7: 24-37
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF

The Lord’s Prayer (sung SFGP 12)
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and for ever.
Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: MV 163 River Running in You and Me

River running in you and me,
Spirit of life, deep mystery.
dancing down to the holy seas,
River run deep, River run free.

River laughed on my birthing day,
Wind and water joined in play.
soaked my soul in a shining spray
River run deep, River run free.

I stand on the edge, lookin’ down,
too scared to swim, afraid I’ll drown -
give me the courage to journey on,
River run deep, River run free.

Journey on far from my home,
River break this heart of stone;
teach me to love, make me your own,
River run deep, River run free.

River singin’ in you and me,
Spirit of life -- deep mystery --
catch us up in your melody,
River run deep, River run free.

Words and music: Ian Macdonald and Gordon Light

*Response: VU 542 We Give You but Your Own

We give you but your own,
what e’er the gift may be;
all that we have is yours alone,
We give it gratefully.

*Hymn: VU 341 Fairest Lord Jesus

Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature,
O thou of God to earth come down:
thee will I cherish, thee will I honor,
thou, my soul's glory, joy, and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
who makes the troubled heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
and fair the twinkling, starry host;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
than all the angels heaven can boast.

All fairest beauty heavenly and earthly,
wondrously, Jesus, is found in thee;
none can be nearer, fairer or dearer
than thou, my Saviour, art to me.

Words: from German, Music: Silesian folk melody, harm. James Hopkirk

*Three-fold Amen
