THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call To Worship
In the east and west, the north and south
God creates beauty and life.
From all corners of the globe
God calls us to love and to live and to follow.
In our homes and our hearts, in this church and in the world
we sing and serve, we hope and we pray.
Let us worship God.

*Hymn: MV 135 Called by Earth and Sky

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious these waters, endless seas,
deep ocean’s dream,
waters of healing, rivers of rain,
the wash of love again.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious this gift, the air we breathe;
wind born and free.
Breath of the Spirit, blow through this place,
our gathering and our grace.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious these mountains, ancient sands;
vast and fragile land.
Seeds of our wakening, rooted and strong,
Creation’s faithful song.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious the fire that lights our way,
bright dawning day.
Fire of passion, sorrows undone,
our faith and justice one.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Words and music: Pat Mayberry

Opening Prayer
God of all creation, you have opened the world around us and filled it with beauty and purpose. Each creature declares your praise.
The mountain states your majesty’
the ripened field, your generosity.
Birds flying aloft sing of your freedom;
the tiny ant works with your persistence.
We pray that all our work will honour your justice and mercy.
May all our relationships speak of your compassion.
So may we praise you, O God,
not just in this hour of worship but in all the hours you grant us, as we follow Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Friend.
Amen.

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen deeply as Scripture is proclaimed.

Hebrew Scripture: Psalm 1 – VU 724
Refrain: Blessed are those who follow the law of God.
Blessed are those who do not follow the counsel of the wicked, or linger in the way of sinners, or sit down among those who mock.
But their delight is in the law of God, and on that law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees planted beside steams of water, yielding their fruit in due season.
Their leaves do not wither, and whatever they produce shall prosper.
R: Blessed are those who follow the law of God.

As for the wicked, it is not so with them,
but they are like the chaff, driven away by the wind.
Therefore the wicked shall not be able to stand when judgement comes, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For God watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
R: Blessed are those who follow the law of God.

Epistle: James 3:13-4:37-8a
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

*Hymn: VU 297 All Praise to You

All praise to you, O God of all creation:
you made the world, and it is yours alone.
The planet Earth you spun in its location
amid the stars adorning heaven's dome.
We lease the earth, for but a life's duration,
yet for this life, it is our cherished home.

With wondrous grace you clothed the Earth in splendour;
with teeming life you filled the sea and land.
Instil in us a sense of awe and wonder
when we behold the bounty of your hand.
Then when we hear the voice of bird or thunder,
we hear the voice our faith can understand.

To tend the earth is our entrusted duty,
for Earth is ours to use and not abuse.
O gracious God, true source of all resources,
forgive our greed that wields destruction's sword.
Then let us serve as wise and faithful stewards
while Earth gives glory to creation's Lord.

Words: Omer Westendorf

*Gospel: Mark 9:30-37
This is the gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

Prayers of the People
Lord, in your mercy.
Hear our prayer.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: MV 195 Long Ago and Far Away

Long ago and far away
Jesus lived and worked and prayed
healed the sick and the fearful and lonely
Lived his life to show us God’s way.

Stretched his arms out as he said
Fill the cup and share the bread
Remember me in love and joy and blessing.

Jesus gathered the children around him
spoke of love and the joy to be found
told them stories of wisdom and wonder
God’s creation in all that’s around.

Stretched his arms out as he said
Fill the cup and share the bread
Remember me in love and joy and blessing.

Jesus called all his friends to be with him
share the bread and the cup once again
life to you I will offer it gladly
love will be with you right to the end.

Stretched his arms out as he said
Fill the cup and share the bread
Remember me in love and joy and blessing.

Prayer over the Gifts

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION
Words of Invitation
Communion Liturgy
The Lord be with you
And also with you
Lift up your hearts
We lift them up to God
Let us give thanks to the Lord, the God of all Creation
It is right to give God thanks and praise

You spoke the Word ...
...And so with the wonders of creation and the songs of praise of all your creatures both in heaven and on earth we praise you now and forever singing:
Holy, holy, holy are you,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are filled with your glory,
Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the one who comes in your name.
Hosanna in the highest,
hosanna in the highest!

(tune – VU 932, setting A)

In the night that Jesus was betrayed...
...Every time you drink of the wine, do this in remembrance of me.

So we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died
Christ is risen
Christ will come again.

Therefore God, we who seek your reconciliation;...
... By whom and with whom and in whom, in the unity of your Creative Spirit, with all that has been, is, and will be in your universe, we come before you and worship you, God of all, in everlasting praises.
Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking the Bread/Filling the Cup
The bread of life. The cup of blessing.
(Please remain in your seat, the communion elements will be brought to you.)

Sharing of the Elements

Prayer after Communion
...We are now commissioned to:
feed as we have been fed,
forgive as we have been forgiven,
love as we have been loved.
Thanks be to God. Amen.

*Hymn: VU 595 We Are Pilgrims

We are pilgrims on a journey,
fellow travellers on the road;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

Sister, let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear;
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh I'll laugh with you;
I will share your joy and sorrow,
till we've seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we've known together
of Christ's love and agony.

Brother, let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.

Words and music: Richard Gillard

*Commissioning & Benediction
The Book of James instructs God’s beloved: “Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom.”
We will go with these words in our hearts to serve as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
And may the God of wisdom guide you; The Christ of compassion walk beside you; And The Spirit of hope inspire you each and every day
Thanks be to God. Amen! Gilakas’la!

*Three-fold Amen
