THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
Lord, open our lips,
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

*Hymn: VU 236 Now Thank We All Our God

Now thank we all our God,
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom this world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God
through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts
and blessèd peace to cheer us,
and keep us in His grace,
and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all ills,
in this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God
for all that has been given,
the Son, and Spirit blest
who dwell in highest heaven,
the one eternal God,
whom earth and heaven adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as scripture is read.

Psalm 127 BAS p 886
1 Unless the Lord builds the house, *
their labour is in vain who build it.
2 Unless the Lord watches over the city, *
in vain the watchman keeps his vigil.
3 It is in vain that you rise so early and go to bed so late; *
vain, too, to eat the bread of toil, for he gives to his beloved sleep.
4 Children are a heritage from the Lord, *
and the fruit of the womb is a gift.
5 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior*
are the children of one’s youth.
6 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them! *
he shall not be put to shame when he contends with his enemies in the gate.

Gracious Father, watch over the Church, built on the foundation of your love. Help us so to live and proclaim the gospel that many may find life in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Epistle: Hebrews 9: 24-28

*Hymn: MV 127 I Saw the Rich Ones

I saw the rich ones I saw what they gave
the widow who offered two pennies she’d saved
and I saw she was smiling I knew she was glad
and I wondered because she gave all that she had

But with God the world is turned upside down
the poor are embraced and the lost they are found
Let’s work for a world where all people are free
where it’s good to feel good about God loving you and me.

I saw Zacheus, a sinner they said
but to his house I saw Jesus go to break bread
and I knew something special had happened that day
when Zacheus gave half of his riches away

But with God the world is turned upside down
the poor are embraced and the lost they are found
Let’s work for a world where all people are free
where it’s good to feel good about God loving you and me.

The men in the vineyards were grumbling one day
I knew they weren’t happy with what they’d been paid
for the ones who came later were paid just the same
as the workers who greeted the dawn when they came

But with God the world is turned upside down
the poor are embraced and the lost they are found
Let’s work for a world where all people are free
where it’s good to feel good about God loving you and me.

Sermon

Prayers of the People
PWRDF (Alongside Hope)/Mission and Service
. . . we pray. Lord, hear and have mercy.

*The Lord’s Prayer
Gathering our prayers and praises into one, let us pray as our Saviour taught us,
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Peace
God of love, stir us to work for peace as we remember this day.
The Peace of Christ be always with you!
And also with you!

*Offertory Hymn: MV 171 Christ Has No Body Now but Yours

Christ has no body now but yours,
no hands but yours.
Here on this earth,
yours is the work,
to serve with the joy of compassion.

No hands but yours to heal the wounded world,
no hands but yours to soothe all its suffering,
no touch but yours to bind the broken hope
of the people of God.

Christ has no body now but yours,
no hands but yours.
Here on this earth,
yours is the work,
to serve with the joy of compassion.

No eyes but yours to see as Christ would see,
to find the lost, to gaze with compassion;
no eyes but yours to glimpse the holy joy
of the city of God.

Christ has no body now but yours,
no hands but yours.
Here on this earth,
yours is the work,
to serve with the joy of compassion.

No feet but yours to journey with the poor,
to walk this world with mercy and justice.
Yours are the steps to build a lasting peace
for the children of God.

Christ has no body now but yours,
no hands but yours.
Here on this earth,
yours is the work,
to serve with the joy of compassion.

Through ev’ry gift, give back to those in need:
as Christ has blessed, so now be his blessing,
with ev’ry gift a benediction be
to the people of God.

Christ has no body now but yours,
no hands but yours.
Here on this earth,
yours is the work,
to serve with the joy of compassion.

Words: Adapted by Stephen C. Warner from St. Teresa of Avila; Music: Rick Gunn.

*Response: VU 540 Grant Us God, the Grace

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,
with a spirit large and free,
that ourselves and all our living
we may offer faithfully.

Prayer over the Gifts

Blessing
The Lord bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face shine on us and be gracious to us. The Lord look upon us with favour and grant us peace. Amen.

*Hymn: MV 212 Sent Out in Jesus’ Name

Sent out in Jesus' name,
our hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.
(Repeat)

The angels cannot change a world of hurt and pain
into a world of love, of justice and of peace.
The task is ours to do, to set it really free.
O help us to obey, and carry out your will.

Sending
Go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.
Thanks be to God. Amen. Alleluia. Gilakas’la.

*Three-fold Amen
