THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
Whenever we feel disrespected or overlooked, let down by others,
resting and praying, we affirm that God knows us and loves us.
In those times when we feel lost and unsure, seeking God’s presence in our lives,
listening and singing, we remember that God leads us.
As we worship, we share our worries and concerns, craving answers and support.
Praising and reflecting, we recognize that God works through us.
Together we remember that our God is a God of surprises,
Working in surprising places through surprising people, Loving us in surprising ways. And so, we worship God.

*Hymn: VU 288 Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Great is thy faithfulness, God our Creator,
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
as thou has been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided –
great is thy faithfulness, ever to me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
join with all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided –
great is thy faithfulness, ever to me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow–
wondrous the portion thy blessings provide.

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided –
great is thy faithfulness, ever to me!

Opening Prayer

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is proclaimed.
Hebrew Scripture: 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27

Psalm 130 VU 853
Refrain: Out of the depths I cry to you; my hope is in your promise true.
Out of the depths have I called to you. O God, hear my cry!
Let your ears be attentive to my plea for mercy.
If you should keep account of what is done amiss, O God, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you, therefore we will honour you.
R: Out of the depths I cry to you; my hope is in your promise true.

I wait for you, God; my soul waits, and in your word is my hope.
My soul waits for God more than the watchers long for morning, more than the watchers long for morning.
O Israel, wait in hope, for with God there is love unfailing.
With God is great power to redeem, to redeem you, Israel, from all your sins.
R: Out of the depths I cry to you; my hope is in your promise true.

Epistle 2 Corinthians: 8: 7-15

*Hymn: VU 567 Will You Come and Follow Me

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown
in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare
should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer
in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean,
and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean
in you and you in me?

Will you love the 'you' you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found
to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound
in you and you in me?

Christ, your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In your company I’ll go
where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow
in you and you in me.

Sermon Reflection

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF

In the silence and led by the Spirit,
we yearn for healing, we wait for your saving presence.
Silence

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: VU 510 We Have This Ministry

We have this ministry and we are not discouraged;
it is by God’s own power that we may live and serve.
Openly we share God’s word, speaking truth as we believe,
praying that the shadowed world may healing light receive.
We have this ministry, O God receive our living.

O Christ, the tree of life, our end and our beginning,

we grow to fullest flower when rooted in your love.
Brothers, sisters, clergy, lay, called to service by your grace,
different cultures, different gifts, the young and old a place.
We have this ministry, O God, receive our giving.

The yoke of Christ is ours, the whole world is our parish;

we daily take the cross, the burden and the joy.
Bearing hurts of those we serve, wounded, bruised and bowed with pain,
Holy Spirit, bread and wine, we die and rise again.
We have this ministry, O God, receive our loving.

Words and music: Jim Strathdee.

*Response: VU 542 We Give You But Your Own

We give you but your own,
what e’er the gift may be;
all that we have is yours alone,
We give it gratefully.

Prayer over the Gifts
Your offerings bring change in the way of Christ Jesus.
For those in the depths of despair, there is hope against hope. For those who need help but are shy to ask for it, there is acceptance without judgement. For those who can see no way out of a challenging situation, there is compassionate listening. For those whose names we will never know but whose need is great, the mission fund brings undreamt-of opportunity.
Your offerings are blessed, and they will bless others.
The way of Christ be praised. Amen.

Commissioning
Go from here as those who strive to bring new life.
We will be hope-bringers to those who know deep loss.
Strive to bring new life.
We will recognize those who are suffering and accompany them in their pain.
Strive to bring new life.
We will watch out for the despairing and offer them time and inspiration.
Strive to bring new life.
We will share our faith with those who have no firm foundation and be open to ongoing discussions.
Thanks be to God. Amen! Gilakas’la!

*Hymn: VU 691 Though Ancient Walls

Though ancient walls may still stand proud
and racial strife be fact,
though boundaries may be lines of hate,
proclaim God’s saving act!

Walls that divide are broken down;
Christ is our unity!
Chains that enslave are thrown aside;
Christ is our liberty!

When vested power stands firm entrenched
and breaks another’s back,
when waste and want live side by side,
it’s Gospel that we lack.

Walls that divide are broken down;
Christ is our unity!
Chains that enslave are thrown aside;
Christ is our liberty!

The truth we seek in varied scheme,
the life that we pursue,
unites us in a common quest
of self and world made new.

Walls that divide are broken down;
Christ is our unity!
Chains that enslave are thrown aside;
Christ is our liberty!

The church divided seeks that grace,
that newness we proclaim,
a unity of serving love
that lives praise to God’s name!

Walls that divide are broken down;
Christ is our unity!
Chains that enslave are thrown aside;
Christ is our liberty!

This broken world seeks lasting health
and vital unity.
God’s people, by God’s Word renewed,
cast off all slavery!

Walls that divide are broken down;
Christ is our unity!
Chains that enslave are thrown aside;
Christ is our liberty!
