THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship

*Hymn: VU 308 Many and Great, O God, Are Your Works

Many and great, O God, are your works,
Maker of earth and sky.
Your hands have set the heavens with stars,
your fingers spread the mountains and plains.
Lo, at your word the waters were formed;
deep seas obey your voice.

Grant unto us communion with you,
O star-abiding one.
Come unto us and dwell with us,
with you are found the gifts of life.
Bless us with life that has no end,
eternal life with you.

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as scripture is read.

Hebrew Scripture: Esther 7:1-6, 9-10, 9:20-22

Psalm 124 VU 848
Refrain: Our help comes from God the maker of heaven and earth.
“If God had not been at our side”
Now let Israel say:
“If God had not been at our side when mortals rose up against us,
Then they would have swallowed us alive, when their fury was roused against us.
Then the flood would have swept us away, and the torrent would have covered us.
Then the raging waters would have gone right over our heads.”
R: Our help comes from God the maker of heaven and earth.

But praised be God who has not given us as a prey to their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s snare; the snare is broken and we are free.
R: Our help comes from God the maker of heaven and earth.

Epistle: James 5: 13-20

*Hymn: VU 385 Spirit Divine, Attend Our Prayers

Spirit divine, attend our prayers,
and make this house your home;
descend with all your gracious powers:
O come, great Spirit, come!

Come as the light; to us reveal
our emptiness and woe;
and lead us in those paths of life
where all the righteous go.

Come as the wind: sweep clean away
what dead within us lies,
and search and freshen all our souls
with living energies.

Come as the fire and purge our hearts
like sacrificial flame;
let our whole life an offering be
to our Redeemer's name.

Spirit divine, attend our prayers:
make a lost world your home;
descend with all your gracious powers:
O come, great Spirit, come!

*Gospel: Mark 9:38-50
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church
Thanks be to God

Sermon / Reflection

Affirmation of Faith
We are not alone,
we live in God’s world.

We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God.

We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

Intercessions/ Prayers
PWRDF/Mission and Service

The Peace
The Peace of Christ be always with you!
And also with you!

*Offertory Hymn: MV 178 Who Is My Mother?

Who is my mother,
who is my brother?
All those who gather round Jesus Christ:
Spirit-blown people
born from the Gospel
sit at the table, round Jesus Christ.

Differently abled,
differently labeled,
widen the circle round Jesus Christ:
crutches and stigmas,
culture’s enigmas,
all come together round Jesus Christ.

Love will relate us
colour or status
can’t segregate us, round Jesus Christ:
family failings,
human derailings
all are accepted, round Jesus Christ.

Bound by one vision,
met for one mission
we claim each other, round Jesus Christ:
here is my mother,
here is my brother,
kindred in Spirit, through Jesus Christ.

*Response: VU 581 When We Are Living v2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

*Prayer Over the Gifts

The Lord’s Prayer
Gathering our prayers and praises into one, let us pray as our Saviour taught us,
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Blessing

*Hymn: MV 135 Called by Earth and Sky

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious these waters, endless seas,
deep ocean’s dream,
waters of healing, rivers of rain,
the wash of love again.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious this gift, the air we breathe;
wind born and free.
Breath of the Spirit, blow through this place,
our gathering and our grace.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious these mountains, ancient sands;
vast and fragile land.
Seeds of our wakening, rooted and strong,
Creation’s faithful song.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.

Precious the fire that lights our way,
bright dawning day.
Fire of passion, sorrows undone,
our faith and justice one.

Called by earth and sky,
promise of hope held high.
This is our sacred living trust,
treasure of life sanctified,
called by earth and sky.
